Last week, I took a drive through the Adelaide Hills to visit Brendan and Laura from Unico Zelo. Based out of Gumeracha in a gorgeous industrial cold store from the 1920’s, they produce minimal intervention wines under the label Unico Zelo, and small-batch spirits under the Applewood Distillery label. Their recently renovated bar section opened the week prior, and there was much cause for celebration. I’ve followed these guys for a couple of years now, and absolutely love the direction they are heading.
After a tour of the cold store, we had a look and taste through a few of the wines; Fiano is their signature variety made from Riverland-grown fruit and is a favourite. Their spirits vary from lemoncello to espressocello (and others in between!) along with several gin varieties, all produced on site. I always find it gratifying to see where products are made and the connection to the land in where they are produced.
I am excited to see where Brendan and Laura take the brands in the future and for their upcoming vintage.
Many thanks Unico Zelo.
